IESW vocab

Are you an IESW and not sure what some of the vocab means?  Here is a brief list to help you understand

Accommodation – This is typically a position where the member needs changes to their work duties due to an injury/illness, etc.  The Union/SD36 have been involved with the member/school with this position.  Someone that is in an accommodated position does not need to share why they are in an accomodation and these positions and/or work duties are not to change without proper discussions.

Bumping – Bumping is when you originally were successful at getting a position at the June posting meeting (many people will say that you owned that position) and then it changed, through no fault of your own.  Typically, this is when the school looses hours and you are the least senior person so you no longer have hours at that school.  It can also happen when your position changes from an IESW II to an IESW I.  When this position changes, you have the opportunity to attend the JUNE posting meeting at the Bell Center and indicate that you want to go to the Bumping Meeting to pick a position.  You MUST attend the Posting Meeting and declare you want to attend the Bumping Meeting.  You can only attend the Bumping Meeting if you have Bumping Rights.  Keep in mind, you can only bump into the same hours/type of position. This means, if you had an IESW I position with 10 hours of IESW II, you can only bump into that same exact position or less.  Once you are successful in getting your ‘bumped’ position, you are then considered to be in a Posted Position.

Bumping Meeting – (see  also Bumping).  This meeting is for ONLY those that have Bumping rights (they lost part of or all of their posted job).  You will NEED to declare at the June Posting Meeting that you want to attend the Bumping Meeting.  If you don’t have Bumping rights, then you can’t attend the bumping meeting.  However, if you have Bumping Rights, you can post into a position at the posting meeting. You don’t have to attend the Bumping meeting if you don’t need  to

Bumping Rights -When your posted position changes by loosing hours or position, you have the opportunity to attend the JUNE posting meeting at the Bell Center and indicate that you want to go to the Bumping Meeting to pick a position. Positions that are released from the June posting meeting (or any left over from the posting meeting or new positions) will be available at the Bumping Meeting.  However, if you have Bumping Rights and you see a position you want at the Posting Meeting, you can post into it.  You don’t only have to go to the Bumping Meeting

IESW I  – this is a position that does not have any additional training required, outside of the typical training needed for the job.  Typically, this position does not do any medical procedures that have required training from Fraser Health

IESW II – this is a position that does have additional training required, outside of the typical training needed for the job.  Typically, is does medical procedures that have required training from Fraser Health.  There is typically an increased pay for this position

IESW III -this is a position that does have additional training required, outside of the typical training needed for the job.  Typically, is does work in programs with more high-needs and does have required training from District Staff or outside agencies.  There is typically an increased pay for this position

Placed Position – (see also Spareboard Position) this is a position that you are working in where you DID NOT get it from the June Posting Meeting.  You would have been awarded this position either by the Placement Meeting (usually in August), call-out during the school year, a temporary position, etc.  This is the same as a Spareboard Position.  These positions have an ‘end-date’.

Placement Meeting – this meeting is for those that didn’t get a position at the Posting Meeting in June or the Bumping Meeting.  Even if you get a full-year position at this Placement Meeting, you are still considered a Spareboard member.  This type of position has an ‘end-date’ so you are not considered a posted member.  This is important to know so that you know who your Shop Steward is.  Keep in mind, if a school loses hours the placement positions are the positions that are typically cut first followed by the least senior person.

Posted Position – you successfully got a position at the JUNE posting meeting.  This would either be done in-person at the Bell Centre on the last day of June or you sent your posting choices into HR & the Union (as per the Collective Agreement) because you were unable to attend that day (due to being off-work for WCB, illness, injury, short/long-term disability..). When you are in a posted position, you have the ability to work in that position/school for as long as those hours are there.  Keep in mind, when you are successful at getting a posting at the Posting Meeting, you can still be moved around the school. Posted positions are school-based (unless there is specialized training to a specific student IESW II) and you can move around that school you are posting to.

Spareboard Position – this is a position that you are working in where you DID NOT get it from the June Posting Meeting.  You would have been awarded this position either by the Placement Meeting (usually in August), call-out during the school year, a temporary position.  This is the same as a Placed Position.  These positions can be short term positions or for the full year.  Even if it’s for the full year, it’s not considered a Posted Position.  Posting only comes from the June Meeting.
